Spigot Celebrates Mid-Autumn Festival

Last week was the second most important traditional Chinese holiday right after Chinese New Year and we wanted to bring some of the Chinese culture into our office by celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival!

The Mid- Autumn Festival can also be called the Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival. It is a three day celebration that began on September 19th and ended on the 21st. It dates to over 3,000 years ago when the Emperor of China worshipped the moon for bountiful harvest. The Chinese believe that the moon is at its brightest and fullest size coinciding with the harvest time in the middle of Autumn.

It is celebrated in many Asian communities as a time for families to unite and give thanks. They celebrate by sending lanterns with good wishes written on them up into the sky or just simply hanging them on their homes and trees as decorations. They eat mooncakes, grapes, hairy crabs, duck, pomelos, and pears to celebrate the harvest.

Spigot decided to get a variety of mooncakes and decorate the office as they do in the Asian communities. The mooncake flavors we tried were durian, lotus seed and red bean paste. Everyone was a little hesitant at first because of the strong smell but once we tried them, a few of us really enjoyed them!
