Netflix is making strides- What's driving their success?

Netflix is making a lot of money! Although prices have increased all over the world, Netflix has had 37 million people subscribing last year adding to the already 200 million paid members. They have grown 30% from 2019! Once they raised their prices, Netflix hit $25 billion in revenue and $2.8 billion in profit for the year.

The BBC reported that some of their success is coming from “non-Anglophone” shows. Over 80% of Netflix’s new users have come from outside the US and Canda with Europe being the leading country. The French- language show Lupin skyrocketed to the number one spot in Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Italy, and Spain all while ranking second in the United States. Netflix estimates that 70 million households will watch the show in its first 28 days of being out!

Netflix is becoming a force to be reckoned with in the filmmaking and television industry. They used to heavily rely on other companies for their content but now with Bridgerton, Tiger King, Squid Games and Money Heist people are craving more “Netflix Specials”. Netflix responded to the people and planned to release at least one original film every week in the year 2021.

The major reason Netflix continues to succeed is their constant winning battle with the competition. Disney, Viacom, HBO, Hulu and so many more are pushing their efforts into streaming, but they are new to the game. Netflix has been around since 1997 allowing people to buy and rent DVDs and later came out in 2007 with their streaming service. Netflix was ready for the competitors and will continue to strive to be the number one streaming service worldwide.

2022 Work Advice

Welcome to 2022! I think we're all thinking the same thing…2022 ALREADY??? January 21st, 2020, covid came to the US and the whole world shut down. The plan was to shut down for a few months and get back to normal, but we are now in 2022 experiencing new strains and some parts of the world are completely shut down still. There is now a new normal and every state and country has their own take on it. If you live in Florida, things feel normal except having to wear mask in certain places such as the doctor’s office. But if you live in New York, restaurants and schools are still experiencing shutdowns. This makes for a stressful personal life but not to mention the extra stress on top of normal workday stress. Many people are experiencing different situations. Do you work from home? Do you work in the office? If you work in the office, what are you supposed to do- can you even sit together and eat lunch anymore? Many people are feeling overwhelmed with all the change, and they are mentally shutting down or even quitting their jobs. So, what do we do when we are faced with these challenges?

One therapist stated that it's better to do something rather than nothing when you begin feeling overwhelmed in this new world- you have had to adapt. People feel like there is too much they cannot control so they avoid everything all together to temporarily feel better. For example, say you have three projects coming up and rather than to just push them off to the side and tell yourself you will deal with it another day, think about what you have the energy to work on today. What task would alleviate the most stress if you completed it? “Start there”, says Shannon Garcia a psychotherapist at States of Wellness Counseling. That way you get one thing off your list, you will feel like you have completed something for the day, and you will be able to continue this way until all three projects are completed.

The next step is to set a system for to-do list. Some people like doing a today to-do list, this week to-do list or even a longer-term to-do list. When you’re feeling overwhelmed with all the task, it helps to break it up, so it becomes more manageable. Once you have your list just focus on one task at a time and some people it helps them to focus on the hour and moment, they’re in. We cannot predict the future and it doesn’t help us to worry about what is coming next so just be present in the moment you’re in and get done what you need to get done.

People are struggling with everything covid has caused and people are dealing with the trauma in different ways. Your coworkers are not mind readers. They do not know what you are going through, and they will not know how to show you support if you do not communicate how you feel. If you give your team the chance to support you, you will feel empowered, and the uncertainty and anxiety will disappear.

It is important to remember that communication is key whether it be in your personal or work life. If you receive an email from someone and you feel that it is short and you think they are upset with you, instead of avoiding the conflict or responding with attitude, ask if they have a minute to facetime/zoom or even a phone call. Most of the time written word can be taken differently than what the writer meant by it. It will also give the writer of the email a learning opportunity to know how their emails are coming across and maybe not how they wrote them to sound like. The perceived conflict can be solved quickly with just the two-minute phone call or facetime, and no one will have to wonder what someone meant.

The final and most important take away is to always choose yourself. Companies care about the health and safety of their employees, and this is becoming truer during these times. If you need to take a day off to recharge, do it! The project will still be there on Monday, and you can complete it then. If taking a long weekend helps you refresh and produce better work, then your employer will allow it. As a human, you need rest but don’t spend your time off sleeping all day. Find a hobby or something you enjoy doing just because you enjoy doing it! “You do not need to monetize your joy” says Tanisha M. Ranger who is a licensed clinical psychologist.

Here at Spigot, we care about our employees and lean heavily on the thought process of work hard, play hard. We understand that covid has taken a toll on many people’s lives and we are here to support our employees. Intern To Leader

At Spigot we love to invest in our employees and help them grow into what they want to be in their career. A perfect example of this is Jordin. Jordin started as an intern for Spigot back in October 2018 and has now become the team lead of Android engineering. I sat down with him and asked him a few questions about his internship and his time at Spigot.

Where did you go to college and what is your degree in?

Jordin went to Florida Gulf Coast University and got his bachelor’s degree in software engineering. He graduated in 2020.

How did you start at Spigot?

There was an internship fair at FGCU and Jordin was walking around talking to different companies. He came across our table and started talking to Shayna about what his interest were and what he was going to school for. He said he felt like everything just clicked when he was talking to us about our opportunities and culture. He then became an intern until he graduated from FGCU but he said after the first 6 months, he didn’t feel like he was just an intern. He was able to contribute to the team in major ways and felt more like a part time employee.

When did you realize that you wanted to become a full-time employee of Spigot?

Jordin realized he wanted to become a full-time employee of Spigot not too long after he began his internship. He said during his internship he found “People get paid to have fun here” and loved the culture. He said that most companies go through the honeymoon phase with employees, but he felt that Spigot continued to be great and continued to care about him learning the industry. He enjoyed his internship because he was able to learn firsthand from people who have been in the industry for a while, and it was more than the basic knowledge you get from school. “Spigot invested time and put effort into teaching me”, Jordin says.

What is your favorite thing about Spigot?

His favorite thing about Spigot is our culture. The fact that Spigot is a large company, but we still have a small company/ start-up vibe. He said that even as an intern he felt there were very little barriers, and he was free to give his opinions and ideas and they were taken into consideration. They weren’t always accepted but they were never brushed off by someone. Jordin loved the feeling of being able to make a major impact within the company which is not something interns are able to do at other companies.

What is your current role at Spigot? How did you get there?

Jordin is now the team lead of android engineering. He began as an intern for software engineering and was just working on basic webpages and data collection programs. Six months into his internship he began working on android launchers. Once he graduated from college he was brought on full time as a software engineer and a 14 months later because the team lead!

What is your end goal?

Jordin would love to eventually run his own company since he enjoys entrepreneurship. He likes being in a leadership role and looks up to Danny who is our CTO. Jordin says, “Eventually he wants to be the guy with all the knowledge and the one people are able to go to with any product related questions and ideas.”.

What is a highlight of your time at Spigot?

During his time at Spigot, the mobile team hit a major goal. Once they hit this milestone, they celebrated in the office by popping champagne and going down to Fort Myers Beach. There, the team rented Jet Skis for the day! He said, “It felt like his team just won the championship everyone was so excited.”

Any advice you would pass on to people thinking about getting an internship?

“Doing something is better than just sitting around thinking about doing something”, Jordin says. He said you can do anything you’re interested in but to make sure you have side projects and are trying to learn things that are outside of your schoolwork. That stands out to employers and helps you in the long run.

Facebook Outage = World Panic

More than 3.5 billion people all over the world use Facebooks apps and on Monday, October 4th the world quickly realized how much we all rely on them. Users reported an error message popping up on their Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp around 11:40am Monday morning. Not too long after, Facebook completely disappeared from the internet. This was the longest lasting downtime for Facebook since 2008.

They quickly took to Twitter to tell the world that they knew about outage and they were working on getting it back up and running but it could take hours to stabilize. Many people use these apps to communicate with their friends and families, while companies use them to expand business through advertising and community outreach. Not to mention how many people connect Facebook to login to many other services like their smart TVs, thermostats and other devices. Facebook apologized to all their users and companies who depend heavily on the use of Facebook and their other apps.

What caused the outage?

Facebook stated that the cause of the outage was a configuration change to the routers that coordinate network traffic between the company's data centers. When this happened, it created a cascading effect and brought all Facebook services to a halt.

What happened when Facebook disappeared?

When Facebook shut down I think everyone freaked out a little bit. You could hear everyone talking about their page wasn't loading or they couldn’t post an Instagram picture. Everyone just went to different platforms such as TikTok, playing Fortnite, watching TV or even opening up a book. Netflix’s engagement jumped up 14% while Twitter welcomed everyone who came from Facebook by tweeting “hello literally everyone”.

This outage couldn’t have come at worse time for Facebook. Just one day before, a whistleblower leaked private internal research stating that the company’s executives knew the negative impacts of Instagram within the younger users especially teenage girls.

Will Facebook crash again?

According to Mi-Token, Chief Technology Officer at American Military News says that BGP is “a mechanism by which routers across the planet sharer information with each other about where IP addresses live on the internet. If those are withdrawn, nothing in the world knows where the IP addresses are, therefore, they are effectively ‘gone.” Meaning that Facebook can certainly crash again.
